Berlin painter Anne Berning makes art history the subject of her work. Since the early 1990s, she has been creating oversized, painted, art book spines. She also deals with art post cards in her work, those pocket-size reproductions which have ostensibly made artwork available around the world.
Over the past few years, Berning has used cut-out style quotations, fragments of text, and assorted bric-a-brac from her studio inventory as an additional means of exploring painting as a medium. The images painted on aluminum are randomly laid out on tables - like stick-on notes in a studio.

The large formats and the unconventional approach to presenting her work confront the viewer with familiar subjects. In the end, they challenge us to reconsider our perception of images. It becomes apparent that it is not a "copy" or an "appropriation" that stands in the foreground. Moreover, her work is created both from the array of collected resources from our culture with a different image each observer. The many facets of Anne Berning's work bear witness to her ironic love affair with painting.
