He plays with clichés, symbols, familiar motifs, altering them slightly or giving them new meanings. The pictorial worlds of the young Swiss artist Léopold Rabus (*1977, Neuenburg / Switzerland) defy any clear interpretation. The viewer wanders through them as though they were worlds of make-believe that might suddenly turn into a nightmare. His works are concerned with the dialectics of good and evil, religion and sexuality, life and death.  Rabus's themes undergo a formal disruption through the graphic exaggeration, garish colours, unusual materials and extraordinary luminescence of his paintings.

This young artist's unmistakable style, the way he combines aesthetic appeal with the darkness of an abyss, the way he links the here-and-now with the beyond, the way he captures on canvas twilight worlds of such extreme fantasy and ambiguity lend his works a charisma that the viewer can hardly resist.  Léopold Rabus does not  re-invent painting but rather draws on its glorious past, at times combining it into installations verging on the extravagant.

The exhibition is being presented in association with Galerie Adler, Frankfurt.
