HBO 200 W/2

Question

What is the difference between HBO 200 W/2 and HBO 200 W?

Answer

Both lamp types are mercury short arc lamps that can be operated both in AC and DC mode.

  • HBO 200 W/2 is a standard type without an ignition electrode.
  • HBO 200 W is an old-fashioned type with an ignition electrode. Though it is still available the lamp is not listed in the catalogue and is no longer recommended for new applications.

Safety measures

Question

What are the safety measures to be observed with spectral lamps?

Answer

Spectral lamps have an extreme high luminance of the light arc. Some of them generate UV radiation. They develop high internal pressures during operation. For these reasons it is necessary to protect people from being dazzled or exposed to UV radiation. This calls for closed lamp housings with safe cooling grids.

Ageing process

Question

How is the ageing process of an HBO 50 W/AC manifested and how is the end of the life span recognized?

Answer

The HBO 50 W/AC is designed for alternating current and has a life expectancy of 100 hours. During the lifespan, the electric and technical light variables become altered.

The following statements may serve as a guideline:

  • Operational voltage UL [V]: Increase after 70-100h by about 10-15%
  • Light power F [lm]: Decrease after 70-100h by about 10-15%
  • Light density [cd/cm2 ]: Decrease after 70h by about 20%, after 100h by about 25%

The voltage increase results from an enlarged electrode distance by burn off from the electrodes as a result of lifespan.

The deposited material from the electrodes settles partially on the inner glass wall which blackens it and, in this manner, contributes to the decrease of photometric values, as also to the external ageing of the quartz glass ("deglassing").

All light bulbs can be operated on direct voltage or direct current respectively

However, through an influence on the surface structure of the coil, a slight shortening of the lifespan can also occur, in certain circumstances

Spectral lamps

Question

What is special about spectral lamps and where are they used?

Answer

  • OSRAM spectral lamps are discharge lamps for AC operation. They generate spectral lines of noble gases and metal vapors. They do not have to be re-adjusted in the course of their service life. Spectral lamps when used with narrow band filters are best suited as sources of monochromatic radiation. Additional usage of prisms or optical gratings is not necessary.
  • Spectral lamps can be applied in all fields where monochromatic light is necessary, like scientific and industrial optics, spectroscopy and chemistry.

Spectral lamp operation

Question

Can spectral lamps be operated in old-fashioned P 28 s lamp holders?

Answer

Today almost all spectral lamp types come with a Pico 9 base

In order to operate them in old-fashioned P 28 s lamp holders it is necessary to use adapter no. 454/s. This adapter provides both a proper light center length and a proper direction of the light.
